Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 4 pounds cabbage 3-4 pounds chopped
  • 1 cup yellow onion chopped
  • 1 cup chicken broth or vegetable broth for vegetarian
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • ½ cup butter unsalted or vegan

Spices

  • ½ teaspoon Old Bay seasoning or Cajun seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Method

Preparation

  • Cut out the core of the cabbage and chop the leaves coarsely using a knife or a food processor. Remove the outer layer of leaves first and discard them.

Cooking

  • Heat a cast iron skillet over medium heat and add the butter. Let it melt.
  • Once the butter is melted, add the chopped cabbage, onion, chicken broth, apple cider vinegar, Old Bay or Cajun seasoning, garlic powder, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper to the skillet.
  • Cover the pan with a lid and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • After 10 minutes, remove the lid and let the cabbage cook uncovered for about 15 minutes. Be careful not to let all the broth evaporate, so the cabbage stays moist.
  • Once done, serve this delicious Southern dish hot and enjoy!
