Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Filling Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened For spreading on the dough
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon

Icing Ingredients

  • 1 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for icing)

Method

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, vegetable oil, egg, food coloring, and vanilla.
  • Combine the wet and dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.
  • Roll out the dough on a floured surface into a rectangle.
  • Spread softened butter on the dough, then sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture over it.
  • Roll the dough tightly and slice it into rolls.
  • Place the rolls in a greased pan and let them rise for about 30 minutes.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 25 minutes or until cooked through.

Icing

  • For the icing, beat the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla together until smooth.
  • Spread icing over warm cinnamon rolls before serving.
