Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 2 cups sourdough starter Ensure the starter is active and bubbly
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour You can replace half with whole wheat flour for a heartier roll

For the Egg Wash

  • 1 each egg Beaten for brushing on top of the rolls

Method

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, combine the sourdough starter, warm water, sugar, melted butter, and salt.
  • Gradually add flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead on a floured surface for about 5-10 minutes until smooth.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise for 1-2 hours until it doubles in size.
  • Punch down the dough and divide it into equal pieces. Shape each piece into a roll and place them on a baking sheet.
  • Cover the rolls and let them rise again for 30-45 minutes.

Baking

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Brush the rolls with beaten egg for a golden crust.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
